Obesity in children and adolescents
1. Is obesity a disease?
2. How significant obesity is it in children and adolescents?
3. Is it curable or controllable?
4. What can be done about it?

Obesity is a disease very prevalent in adolescents. Twenty percent of children and adolescents are overweight. It is a worldwide phenomenon. About 20% of adolescent/children in the US are overweight or 1 in every 4-5. 20 years ago 5% where overweight.
Reasons for Increase in Childhood Obesity:

Dietery habits. More fast food, vending machines. More sedentary life style - video games, internet, More TV time with remote, less time outside. Decrease in outdoors activities.
Both parents working or single parent. More homework. More time at school. Majority of day time at school mostly spend in sitting. Fewer opting to breast feed.. Obese parents. Low socioeconomic status.
Health consequence of obesity.
low self esteem. depression diabetes joint problem sleep apnea. asthma. hyperlipedimia low exercise tolerance. increase risk for coronory artery disease later in life. It is a vicious cycle - keeps on feeding. Prevention.
Behavior modification. easy accessibility to healthy food. making healthy food attractive. keeping vending machines with pops and junk food away from schools. less tv, video games, etc. getting parents involved in out door activiteis. fewer trips to fast food places. avoiding fries, big mac, and milk shakes in one meal - be selective. not only encouraging children to be in structured physical activity, but also to be active throughout the day. Studies has shown for weight loss structured exercise programs and being active through the day helps.
